Welcome to the North West

Apart from its popular name "The Platinum Province," the North-West could have been christened "The Province of Five." Across its five regions, from the east, where the tourist can luxuriate at the Five-star Sun City Hotel, to the west, where the aspirant hunter can track down the Big Five, the North-West has much to offer. With bushveld in the east, extending into semi-desert plains in the west, the province's natural treasures include The Groot Marico, The Hartbeespoort Dam and the large Madikwe and Pilanesberg Game Reserves. Five tourism regions have been identified for the province: Bophirima, Central Region, Eastern Region, Rustenburg Region and the Southern Region.

PILANESBERG VOLCANO
The Pilanesber’s calm undulations, now the best defined alkaline ring complex in the world and coated in savanna plains, tree-dotted slopes and riverine thickets, were once the scene of geological turmoil. Before it all happened, a mountain stood higher than Kilimanjaro: an enormous volcano-like edifice towering over the landscape. Then there were cycles of volcanic eruptions deep down where magma cooled before it reached the surface; eventually the centre of the mountain collapsed, forming a crater (now the Mankwe Dam) Millions of years of erosion have reduced the mountain to rolling plains and exposed the hard rock – the cooled magma – that is what we now know as the Pilanesberg.

CANGO THE CLASSIC

Sweat your way through the 90-minute ‘adventure tour’ at the Cango Caves – the caves are hot and humid and the tunnels get narrower and smoother. While the limestone drip formations do show wear of thousands of visitors through the years, it’s still spectacular.

ABSEIL WONDERCAVES

Abseil into the Kromdraai Wonder Cave rather than taking the lift for  a theatrical entrance to this cavern of stalactites and stalagmites.
