This landlocked province is the heart of South Africa. Well-known for its sweeping plains of sunflowers and maize, the province is enclosed to the north and south by South Africa's two main rivers, the Vaal and the Orange respectively. On the Vaal lies the Vaal Dam and on the Orange lies the Gariep Dam. Both of these dams are focal points for tourists and nature lovers alike. The latter will especially enjoy the eastern region of the province where the Free State merges into the splendour of the Drakensberg.
